I hope the bandwidth holds for the photo uploads. The wi-fi is blocking drunkcyclist and advertises that peer to peer is blocked yet, I just ripped the new Californication in 36 minutes. The internet...where a goon can masquerade as a tech geek and get paid for it!
I met a pair of Scotsman and a californian in Lincoln City at the best skatepark in the U.S and enjoyed a night of eating and drinking at devils lake. Check the pics and more will follow.

Oregon skateparks on the coast

I am working my way down the Oregon coast at a slow pace, due to incredible views every 3 miles and amazing skateparks every ten miles it seems. Lincoln city is definitely the ruling park on the coast so far. Reedsport was very good and fun to ride. I was feeling beat down this morning when I hit reedsport today, but, by the end of the day I was feeling pretty good. I have been sleeping 10 hours a night and I am hoping the rain will hold off so that I can ride coos bay in the morning. pics coming soon via the safeway free wi fi.

I was planning on leaving whistler on the 8th of october, but, the mountain is so good, the weather is perfect and the lift lines are non - existant. I will leave in the afternoon of the 9th, after I catch a few laps in the park and then head for portland. I will be in virginia for scott and mally's wedding which I have the great honor of being best man. I leave you with this movie, tentatively titled "Don't do what donny don't does!" Stay on trails pal!

My birthday was a tremendous success, a lovely day on the hill with my riding buddies. The weather up here is a dramatic difference to the 28 day rain streak of yesteryear. We have had some incredible sunsets, some from wildfire smoke pollution and some from the wonders of light and color.

I can not believe it has been 11 months since I left this place. I got my seasons pass yesterday and had bike work to do before I was clear to go up there. Just getting my pass, started the Pavlovian reaction, I was motivated to get the bike ready and hit the mountain today.

I got an evening visit from the parking lot pirates who were ready to grill and plunder! It would be a crime to turn away two hardy pirate captains, manning separate land behemoths through the narrows of the sea to sky highway. We enjoyed pad thai with spicy (b.c. grown) green beans,sourdough bread, salmon fillets and steaks. After a mild imbibing of a grog from the Unibroue brewery, the captains grew restless to pilot their vessels to a night-time mooring for the bed down.

I got to the mountain after riding up from creekside, going to the hill is worse than returning home. The smartest choice is "ride don't slide" an out of bounds trail off the top of whistler garbanzo lift. It is a glorious trail loamy and dark, with wicked features and smiles in every group in those woods. R.D.S. comes out about 3 blocks from the ninety odd steps I negotiate daily.

"Muscle Memory" is what Jamin swears we posess, you get out there on trails you pound down for hours and hours every summer and it just floods back to your muscles, brain, eyes and ultimately your soul as a rider. The downhill bike just feels natural, like a fine knife in your hand, albeit a 46 lb monstrosity!

Last year I broke two forks...good thing the second one only happened about 9 days before I split the country for interbike. I rode an avalanche 7" fork cracked, heavily for 9 days here. Check the crack at the bottom of every run and take another one if it looked good.

Whistler is that incredible! The Whistler experience demands total concentration, all other things, problems, emotions, disappear into violently peaceful highspeed joy. I got about 15,000 feet of descent in today and felt great, tired, but, great! I saved some energy, got a slice of pizza and a coke before riding home to creekside. Dinner on the grill, clean the bike, drink, smoke, repeat.

There is a first time for everything and that was my feelings at the border. I got selected to be searched and interrogated, maybe the new van was throwing them off, or was it the fact that I can take off for 6 weeks and not be missed by the U.S. of A.? I sat for an hour while they asked me the same questions to see if my story was straight, and searched the truck. I had too many tools and too little proof that I need to return to the U.S. Who carries their bank statements on vacation, what about paycheck receipts or your rental agreement? All of these things would have helped me out in this situation, I just didn't have them. Eventually they thought my story was pretty good and they believed me when I said I really didnt want to work on my vacation. I think they didn't have the blackest of hearts to turn around an idiot from alabama after he just drove across the whole damn country. It doesnt matter how you get in as long as you get in!

First leg of fun tour 2009

I completed the first leg of my tour today, made it into auburn with my dodge sprinter van. I transferred the tag from the 4runner onto it, paid them the taxes due and drove out legal beagle. A little trip to the lake for my last rides behind timon's boat for the year and I leave auburn on friday morning.... stay tuned

I have been silent in the blog, due to working to pay off my summer in whistler B.C. Here's some helmet cam footage from the new section of No Joke. It starts up top on the garbanzo lead in and then goes to an old section that hasn't been open for the last few years as the olympic downhill runs were being built. The new sections are great and nice to be riding on since I watched the boys working on it everyday.

The season is ending up here on the hill, The weekends bring small numbers of joeys and goons but, they still manage to clog the drain on all the fun and fast trails. The weekend days mean they get a pass for standing on the lip or pushing up transitions that are better hit in a complete run. A pass means that I will hit that lip you are standing on so don't curse at me, you are lucky I didn't scrub into your leg or whip into your face. The trail Crew up here is doing a fantastic job of putting out new runs or just updating old ones. The one carpenter they have on staff seems to be working non stop to get that wallride finished in the big no joke tunnel. I rode the first panel today and it will be so good when there is a berm in and three panels to carve down through. All of my crew seems to be filtering off into the hinterlands, sprinter steve and sean and sandy are hanging tough long into the end season. My time is ending here and the day I am supposed to leave is bringing rain. I am off to portland for a flight into hell otherwise known as las vegas. I will be working the interbike week then flying back into portland for some snooping around and oregon skatepark touring with my boy micah...

A big congrats to POTTS and his new bride, rein him in ZOE. I know d.i.y. is in fashion but, you had to know putting on a wedding 250 miles from home and baking your own cake was going to be hella busy!

If you are up here in whistler and you see any three of these gentleman behind you on the lift, please pull over to the side and wait out the storm, you will not survive if you try to weather the natural phenomenon that the above riders will generate in their wake.

The summer of bruised ribs begins....

I'm celebrating bruised ribs on either side of my torso and my neck is suffering from a slight case of whiplash...such is a summer in whistler. I got some pics from a friend of a friend, thanks to chris larson for some photo evidence of my full on goon style... It has been cold and wintry the last few days, the sun is supposed to peak out and crankworx is coming in a week or so. The rain will let the trail crews buff the mountain out and smooth all the braking bumps away. (or so we hope) The rock slide will keep the weekend jerk squad down a little bit. The weekdays are for WORK! That means while me an the boyz on the hill are carving the trails, there is no tolerance for JOEY behavior. We can tolerate the masses on the weekends, but, the week days are for the peeps that sacrifice the rest of the year to be on the hill 6 days a week. DO NOT STAND ON TAKE OFF LIPS, PUSH UP LANDING TRANSITIONS OR STAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIL! The weekends you get a pass, weekdays you get squared up on and run down!

The rains finally came....

I got here on the 4th of july, it rained on the 5th of july and after that all we had was dry and sunny. The rains we had been praying for showed up and made the trails very good. Ride don't slide is in prime condition after huge amounts of work by smokey and his crew. Catch berms to rip through at the bottom of all the gnarly vertical shoots of rocks and roots make anyone feel like a pro... A rockslide on the sea to sky highway ensures that the mountain will be inhabited by locals and lucky visitors for the next day or so. Here is a view off my porch to the south, all the steps I negotiate with my bike everyday makes for a great perch to watch the whistler valley...

I finished the hellish drive from atlanta to whistler on the fourth. I celebrated my independence by splitting the U.S. for the canadian west coast dh mecca. I got settled into my apartment, walked down the way to sushi and passed out. I stopped in denver to see scott and mally, I made scott take me to the skatepark so I could ride their big pool. It was amazingly slippery and impossible to carve with the wheels I had on my deck, I got some backside airs in and front-side grinds over the steps. I told scott the camera was too close to the coping...

Too much stuff, too much stuff! I moved out of the storage space and into my abode until the owners return from antartica. It took me 20 days to fit all that junk in the storage space and only 4 days to empty it. I am trying to get rid of stuff right away this time around, ebay, salvation army, out by the curb, who cares? I was on my second to last trip to the space with an empty truck and what do I see in the trash? A gt peformer complete and almost ready to ride, bum tire on the front. Had to pick it up didn't I?

Ice Bowl came and went and my voice suffered only a little, my kidneys suffered all weekend and my eyebrows got shorter in a flash!

My defense is I was channeling a friend who passed away this year, he was the one we relied on for action on the side of stupidity, my transformation into a metrosexual with impeccable eyebrows is for you, MARK.

Thanks to trey for his hosting of one of the only annual events I make it to year in and year out.

whistler and beyond 2007

I worked on eric's house throughout the winter in order to take off the summer for whistler, b.c. I left two months after I expected but finally got out of the dirty south. I made good time across the country and made it to whistler in 5 days. I left at 5 pm on monday and drove into whistler village at 2 am on saturday morning. My usual residence, lot one, was closed off for the crankworx event and I had no parking pass as of yet.
Jamin and I crashed out and awoke to a no camping notice on the windshield from whistler bylaw. I was hoping to run afoul of them later in the season but, it was good to get the game started.

I spent 490$ in gas across the country and my first fill up in canada was 68$ and 31 days after I crossed the border. I dont drive much up here other than around the parking lot, the rv park for showers and laundry. I got a storage space in function for all my extra junk I bring up, wheels, tires, red bulls and all the extra clothes I brought yet dont need.

Heres a pic of the first four days in whistler. Behind the bears you can see burt the river guide, he looks as amazed as the korean girls who surprised this momma and got chased down the river trail!

I will try to post more to the blog as soon as i find the time, it's hard between the riding, the eating and the safety meetings. To all my friends and family, call my phone if you need to, but, email works best at the moment...

El Vez wants a new president for x-mas!

El Vez brought his show to Smithes old bar last night and it was a true x-mas spectacle. Kingsized opened up with the Dames A Flame appearing out from under his giant hoop skirt while he sang dixie. Gorgeous ladies in rebel and yankee unifroms that soon were stripped off after the sword fight! They did an xmas number too with a midget santa, and toy soldier girls handing out krispy kreme donuts.

El vez did it all and a naked number which is on the video. An amazing show with numerous costume changes, big shoes, excellent musicians and the always beautiful "El Vettes!" After they were done there was a cloud of smoke from backstage that smelled like otto's jacket. Safety break!

Seek out El Vez at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!

It rained all day yesterday, I have been using the blackcomb day lodge floor in the basement to stretch during this rainy stint. I got some rides in with julie after she hottfooted it from her job in leavenworth to whistler for her weekly dose of 4 days. She gets out earlier than me everyday and rides later everyday, she has the whistler disease. It was sketchy at times on the roots slick with a steady falling rain but golden with traction in the berms. The rains bring new trail work and aline and dirt merchant are buffed to perfection. The aline drop is the smoothest I have ever seen it in two years. Check the videos on the you tube account my account is boomerbaird. I am heading for vegas for interbike and hate to leave whistler. Next year I'll be hanging a little longer.

No posts since I arrived here and for good reason, THE RIDING! The hill is soooo good right now, we had rain last week and the maintenance crews set upon the trails that were bombed out since crankworks. New lips, new jumps, new trails!!! It was really good and tacky for a few days after that and then the second rain came and brought snow to the higher elevations. We have been riding a new trail on the upper mountain, called sidetrakked. It has big jumps, little jumps, smooth berms, singletrack and anything else you might like. We were out ripping it up with a little gang of cats, and I had a great little run hitting the big lips and keeping my speed up. We paused and then I jumped out front to lead through a little corner that has a straightish line on top of a gnarly root, I went waaayyy too hot into it and I clobbered a rock after the root. Over the bars, slamming my palm, and head on some rocks I crumpled into the woods. At this point my bell has been rung and I am just trying to get up when the comments start rushing in... " That was the worst crash I ever heard and didn't see, THAT didn't sound good!" I get up and roll through said corner and lean up against a tree, sitting dazed, my rear brake caliper is puking fluid from a not obvious at the time crack. The caliper is cracked through and I run down through the rest of the run front brake only, jumping through the bottom of A-Line. The lift is closed, due to thunderstorms, the rain truns to snow on the big mountain and I lay by the creek with my hand in the water eating noodle salad with my good hand. I took the next day off and spent most of it staring up the hill and my bros riding. Tommorrow the dirt will be sooo goood!

I am finally on the road and chanced a stop by at my friends house in nashville, their new headquarters after the katrina mess! The truck is running good and I still dont have curtains sewn up, but, it didnt matter last night! Air conditioning is a luxury, especially considering I will be sleeping in the truck in kansas or some place such as that tonight! I neeed to get higher in the country to get out of the oppressive humidity that settles into the sleeping compartment in my truck. I should hit whistler by wednesday, a day of decompressing will be spent while i get my season pass and drink some fat unibroue beers! No more posts until I hit lot 1, so think good thoughts and cheap gas prices!

I thought I was closer to getting on the road and seeing crankworx, I had a sweet frame on the way to build up for another whistler season. The bumper is painted and waiting for me to pick up. My truck is running pretty well and I have a new power steering pump, muffler and catalytic converter to install. My rear end troubles on the truck was just u - joints and has already been taken care of.

Then the post man walked up and loaded me with hope, only to be thrown down into the pits of bicycle despair! My sweet new to me frame has huge gouges in the headtube from a shop monkey with too much force and not enough sense. In the process of removal of the headset cups, the mechanic pounded away at not the headset cup but the race! This poses a problem for pressing in a quality headset and it staying in there through out a summer at Whistler!
On sunday I will find out which shops are for real in atlanta, i.e. they have a head tube reamer, and see if this problem can be smoothed over and get me out of the heat and into the British Columbian cool mountain air.

oh the travesties of trying to go on vacation for 3 - 4 months...
I pull into the mighty djs driveway and expect to change the oil in my truck, the overcast skies and rumbling thunder make me decide against this step, I proceed to get in my truck and back my bike rack into matt's landcruiser... that i'snt going to be cheap!
No worries I get the parts rolling on his truck and drive south to pick up some parts at SUMMIT in mcdonough... hmm the truck is feeling a little wobbly, seems I have a major problem in the rear end of the truck. Some of my bros say "better to happen here than on the road", I think better on the road and motivated to get farther down the road!
I took the evening off and harold and I enjoyed six feet under
We enjoyed the food and guiness on tap followed by making sure the jagermeister machine was working up to snuff, harold did the honorable thing and went to bed while I meandered off into the night to the drunken unicorn for a supposed late nite show, Instead it was the last few songs of Genghis Tron preceded by a manual going bad over a raccoon or cat like beast. Hell in this town it could have been a fat rat wearing a coon skin jacket!
